The internet is one huge place. There are so many things and so many products out there that you can find. These days, it’s hard not to think that if you have any need or looking for a solution, you will find it by “googling” it. The immense resources available on the internet can lead us to believe that all is lost when it comes to starting an online business, as chances are, many areas that most people can think about would already have so much competition.
Market Research
On the other hand, one of the great things about the internet is that because of its vastness, there are still areas that are not completely filled or saturated. Opportunities abound in terms of what can be captured on the internet. With thorough online market research, one can find a good area or niche that can be entered into. Performing online market research requires performing similar tasks as performing market research on an offline traditional business. It means doing the following:
- finding out how much volume of business happens for each industry or sector,
- finding out how much supply and competition there is in the market
- Trends in the industry (the hottest and latest, and the ones to stay clear of)
- finding out how much demand there is for a particular market/sector
There is a difference with an online market research, and it is to do with how these tasks are done for an online business. Normally on an offline business, market research is performed using things like focus group discussions, surveys, and statistical data analysis of government/industry information. With online market research, the trick is to find a niche using semantics or words that people search for. These are called keywords.
Finding Niche Keywords
There are many tools out there that allow you to research on keywords and how the supply and demand is for that particular search. These tools will tell you how many searches there are for a particular keyword, how many websites rank or use those keywords and what the value is in terms of being #1 for a keyword. Google has a keyword tool that will show you some basic information on performance of a keyword. The trick is to find a keyword that has a healthy amount of searches with not many competition. This will ensure that you can easily get to the top spot with your blogs or articles if you start getting into marketing a product.
Once you have found your keyword, you can then start thinking of looking at becoming an affiliate and sell products for other people. Becoming an affiliate is the easiest way to start making money once you find your niche. This is because it’s free to promote someone else’s products, and you don’t have to worry about creating your own website and building your product from scratch to get into a niche. Many wealthy affiliates start out using this process in order to be able to thrive in an otherwise competitive internet world.

Blogging about a passion is also great in the sense that you are able to share to others what you know in the subject, and other people can learn from it. It is through this that people will find value, and this will eventually lead to a relationship-building process. If people find great value with what you are blogging, they are most likely going to follow your blog, and they will most likely be interested in the other things that you do. The other things may mean your other sites which would sell products (whether associated to your subject or not). These people who follow your blog would have a greater propensity to purchase from you because you would have built the trust with them, and hence they know that you are an honest person, someone that they can rely on.
